At Jelling is the
celebrated stone on which is emblazoned the figure of Christ.
This exceedingly hard stone has withstood Danish weather for
centuries, illustrating the difficulty of creating this
masterpiece on such material. Christ is seen (Fig 7) as a stiff
human figure entwined in a busy entanglement of ribbon-like
animals. It is believed the figures were painted for emphasis at
the time of Harald Bluetooth. |
