On a farm in Broa, Gotland, an unknown artist working in metals designed a number of stylized animal figures. One was a whimsical little fellow that became popular in the ninth century and came to be known as the "Gripping Beast." The "Gribedyr" (Fig 5), shows up on a variety of stamps, sword hilts, pendants and broaches (Fig 6). _______________________________________________________________________
