Viking Art on Stamps - August 1999

INTRODUCTION

Although there is earlier art known, this study is limited to the usually accepted period of the Viking Age 793-1066. Viking art styles can be identified and are unlike those in adjacent geographical areas and periods. While Scandinavia is rather large, its art is essentially homogeneous across the area.

Within the Viking Age, six separate art forms developed more or less chronologically but overlapping. They are:

The names are obviously place names and represent the locations where the form was discovered in archeological digs.

We are fortunate to see so much Viking art on stamps today.
